Donetsk

Mainly Russian speaking city in Eastern Ukraine with almost 1 million inhabitants. Unofficial capital city of Donbass region. Proud host city to the EURO 2012. "The City of a Million Roses".

In the past called Юзовка (Yuzovka) in recognition of the role of John Hughes in its founding or Сталино (Stalino) in Soviet times.

The centre for Ukraine's coal mining and notable steel industry centre.

Big, crowded (try to catch a bus in the morning), with a lot of mines, spoil tips and plants' chimneys everywhere, but surprisingly green. Amazing parks, colorful fountains, interesting monuments. The only tourists who come here are football fans.

Head-on collision of the Soviet past with capitalist present. You can eat cheeseburger in McDonald's looking through window on the biggest Lenin's monument in Europe standing in the heart of the city - on Lenin square. To go home you go along Lenins'kyi Ave., your host organization headquarters is on Illicha Ave.

My home for 9 months.

Photos below (except for the first one) were taken by Donetsk people and published on Это Донецк, детка!
